this recipe

I love finding easy breakfasts to make in my air fryer. And these Cinnamon Sugar Air Fryer French Toast Sticks have become one of my favorites! They are so quick to make and get so crispy and crunchy.

Once they are cooked in the air fryer, they almost remind me of churros or cinnamon sugar donuts! They are delicious on their own, or can be dipped in maple syrup or even topped with a bit of powdered sugar.

To make the Air Fryer French Toast Sticks, all you need to do is mix up your egg/milk mixture, dip the sticks in, then either dip or sprinkle the cinnamon sugar topping on. Then place in your air fryer and cook. No flipping required!

Ingredients

  • Thick brioche bread or Texas Toast - When I make this, I use a thick bread like brioche or Texas Toast. The thickness of the bread helps this cook up perfectly in the air fryer.
  • Eggs - You'll need two eggs for this recipe.
  • Milk - I usually use whole milk, but you can use non-dairy milk like almond milk or oat milk.
  • Vanilla extract - A hint of vanilla extract helps bring out the flavors.
  • Cinnamon - You'll use a bit of ground cinnamon here to mix with the sugar for a nice coating on the French Toast.
  • Sugar - Just plain old granulated sugar!

How to make air fryer french toast sticks

First, take your brioche or Texas Toast slices and cut each slice into thirds.

Next, get your custard sauce ready! Grab a dish with sides (I love using a square casserole dish), and crack your eggs in.

Add your milk and vanilla extract and whisk together with a whisk or fork.

Now it's time to assemble and air fry your French toast sticks!

Take each slice of toast and dip each side in the milk/egg mixture. Then, either lightly dip or sprinkle the cinnamon sugar mixture on.

Place each strip of French toast in the air fryer basket in a single layer, leaving room in between slices. (You will probably have to do multiple batches, depending on the size of your air fryer).

Cook on 350 degrees F for 6-8 minutes. Serve with maple syrup, powdered sugar, or as is!

Customizations

If you want a really nice cinnamon sugar crust and more sweetness, then you can lightly dip your sticks in the cinnamon sugar mixture before placing in the air fryer.

However, if you want a lighter sweetness and more French toast flavor, then just sprinkle on a bit of the cinnamon sugar mixture onto each side.

Want to make it more fall flavored? Add some pumpkin spice to your cinnamon sugar mixture.

Serving suggestions

The air fryer french toast sticks are delicious as is for breakfast or dessert. You can also serve with some maple syrup or powdered sugar and fresh fruit.

If making for dessert, I love these french toast sticks with whipped cream (like this cinnamon whipped cream) or ice cream.

Can you freeze the french toast sticks?

Yes! I love making extras of these cinnamon sugar French toast sticks and having them for breakfast throughout the week. After cooking, place the air fryer French toast strips into a freezer safe bag and place in your freezer.

When you're ready to reheat, pop them back in the air fryer, toaster oven, or regular oven. Make sure they are heated through before serving.

Recipe Tips

  • Just lightly dip the toast in the egg/milk mixture. Don't let it soak, or it will get soggy.
  • For a crunchy cinnamon sugar coating, dip each side in the cinnamon sugar mixture. For a less sweet option, sprinkle the cinnamon sugar mixture on both sides instead of dipping.
  • I did not use parchment paper to line my basket, but if your air fryer is prone to sticking, use a parchment paper liner in your air fryer or spray with a bit of air fryer-safe oil.
  • Place the toast in your air fryer in a single layer and leave room between each slice of toast. Make sure that air can circulate around each slice so it gets perfectly cooked. Don't crowd your air fryer! This may mean you have to do several batches. (I did two batches).
  • This recipe is so easy to double (or triple, or quadruple), if you want to make more and refrigerate or freeze for later.
  • All air fryers cook differently, always check frequently to make sure your french toast sticks cook properly.

Oh no, I'm sorry you're having that issue! I've never needed to flip mine, but in this case, I would say flip them halfway through so that way you can make sure both sides cook the same. I hope that solves it!
